A complete set of fifteen vintage Japanese hina ningyo. These ornamental dolls are displayed for the Girls Day Festival Hinamatsuri, on the 3 March each year in Japan. The set represents the Emperor and Empress, court attendants, musicians, priests and guards, all attired in traditional court dress of the Heian period. Traditionally displayed on a tiered red carpeted stand, the Emperor and Empress sit on the first tier, displayed with a gold screen, byobu, behind. On the second tier, are placed the three court ladies, who serve sake and are shown with serving implements. The third tier displays the five musicians, each with an instrument except the singer who carries a fan. On the fourth tier, are two ministers, the Minister of the Right and the Minister of the Left. They represent the Emperor’s body guards and have both sword and arrows made with real feather fletchings. The fifth tier has three court protectors.
